Improves Mobility

Yoga encourages the use of a range of motions and poses that help to increase flexibility and muscle strength which may benefit our posture and range of motion.

Reduces Stress & Encourages Mindfulness

Many types of yoga practises focus on being in tune with our breath and increase awareness to our thoughts which can assist in switching off from stress and encourages us to remain present. These tools can even be applied to everyday life which may help us to manage stress in the long term.

Increase Confidence

Yoga is something that you can consistently see improvements with and unlike many other types of exercises it is less focused on your physical appearance and more about appreciating your body for all its abilities. Yoga classes are also a great way to socialise in a judgement-free environment and showcases that everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses

Whether you are someone who wants to improve your flexibility or simply just wanting a workout that doesn’t involve going to the weight section yoga is the perfect balance of physical and mental stamina.

Free Tampons and Pads Now Available in all Australian Public Schools

Whilst Victoria hasn’t been kicking many goals in the last year, the introduction of free tampons and pads in all Victorian public schools, is definitely a win. Becoming the first state or territory to do so, the $20.7 million initiative is aimed at reducing the discomfort and embarrassment arounds periods for school-aged girls.

Menstruation is often an uncomfortable part of growing up as a young woman, particularly in the early stages with friends developing at different rates and the taboo connotations associated with periods. The scheme will provide free tampons and pads in not only government secondary schools, but government primary and specialist schools as well. Through providing free sanitary products in schools, the Andrews government is hoping to progress further towards educational equality for all students.

Any woman will know that getting a surprise period at school can be distracting and potentially incredibly mortifying, particularly without access to pads or tampons. It can be incredibly unsettling to use toilet paper in lieu of the appropriate products, consequently impacting the way that female students learn each month.

The initiative will not only play an important role in eliminating the awkward encounters of asking “does anyone have a pad?” in the girl’s bathroom but will also reduce the cost of living for families who are struggling. Menstruation is a normal part of life, yet can cost families hundreds of dollars each year, massively impacting tight budgets of those who are doing it tough.

Whilst the use of sanitary products in schools is entirely voluntary, through providing students with the option, they can make a choice based on their needs, religious and cultural beliefs, maturity, and personal preference. Sanitary items are a necessity, not a luxury, therefore this scheme will help support tens and thousands of students across Victoria.

At the end of July, the government announced that all government schools could provide access to pads and tampons in school bathrooms, with the completion of the rollout scheme being reached. These products will continue to be available for students until June 2023, free of charge.

Feeling Bloated? This Could Be The Reason!

0

If you have a stomach anything like mine, you may have come to accept that feeling slightly uncomfortable is a normal part of your daily routine. Yes, our bodies should do their thing – but nobody wants to strut the streets holding a hard ball of concrete under their t-shirt. Unless that’s your thing.

Here’s the reasoning behind why our bodies react in such an inconvenient way, and what to do about it.

  1. What you eat

The number one reason behind bloating usually has to do with what food you’re eating. Behind every food item is a complex system, and once we get to the digestion process, things can go very wrong. FODMAPs (fermentable oligo-, di-, mono-saccharides and polyols) are types of sugars that escape the digestion process, and are used by the bacteria in your gut. For anyone with sensitivities in this area, it is usually recommended to avoid any foods high in fodmaps. Foods like wheat, dairy, legumes, fruit and cruciferous vegetables are just some examples.

  1. How you eat

Another issue many people forget to pay attention to is how they’re eating. More specifically, how much air is getting into their stomach in between bites. Activities like talking while eating, stress, chewing gum and even loose-fitting dentures can all contribute to increased air intake. To combat this, make sure to eat slowly in a state of relaxation. Also, consider visiting the dentist!

  1. Mental stressors

In addition to swallowing more air when we’re stressed, our mental health has a major impact on our digestive system. When we are mentally under pressure, our bodies react by stimulating a fight-or-fight response. As our sympathetic nervous system prepares for danger, it needs to sustain its energy, thus slowing or completely stopping digestion. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Relaxation therapy and hypnosis are just some treatments that can be taken to solve this issue.

  1. Food Intolerance and conditions

Lastly, if the above information comes as no shock to you, there may be a bigger issue at hand. People with Crohn’s disease, IBS/IBD, Coeliac, and other food intolerances may have bloating as one of their symptoms. If you’re unsure, it’s best to visit a doctor just in case.

Bloating be gone (hopefully).

  1. What’s the inspiration behind your business ?
I was inspired to start Fusspot Collagen Beauty Teas because I am an avid tea drinker, and I was drinking so many cups of tea per day, and so started researching the benefits of drinking tea and was amazed by the incredible health benefits of tea for both your body, your skin and your wellbeing. Tea is packed with antioxidants, polyphenols and catechins and I thought “Why is no-one selling tea as a beauty product!?” I had also been reading and hearing a lot about hydrolyzed collagen peptides at the time, I’m getting older and I was curious about collagen, and then it dawned on me – “What if I could make a product that has the boost of both tea and collagen?”  Then it was all about how do I infuse tea with collagen and make this work because I bet there’s heaps of people out there like me who would be interested in this product!

  1. What is the problem you’re trying to solve?

Ageing and wellness. We all want natural benefits… and we’re all ageing… we want to remain looking and feeling our best! No matter what age you are, you always want to improve your body, your skin, your hair and your nails, just look at the beauty and fitness industries! So, when you learn that our natural collagen production starts to deplete by 1% to 2% per year from your mid 20’s… well, that is quite some impetus when you can start to prevent this in your 30’s,  or maintain and manage ageing in your 40s and 50s, and ingesting collagen is one solution to support improved skin, hair and nails from the inside.

  1. Have you been impacted during Covid? If so what have been some of the challenges (general)? How have you overcome these?

Golly – I had planned for months to launch in Feb 2020, and who knew that Covid19 was going to hit and lock us down 4 weeks after I launched! It really impacted my start and launch plans and of course sales, as by mid-March consumers started to pull back a lot of discretionary spending – people were losing jobs, incomes, ability to pay rent, many were suddenly working from home and some were home-schooling and managing new living arrangements with everyone in the house.

What should have been the start of my business with a steady sales projectory going up – stalled. I had to re-invest initial marketing and PR plans into other areas and pause a lot of planned activity… media was overrun with CoronaVirus so PR was out of the question, social and digital even started to change algorithms…. so I changed my messaging to be far ‘lighter’ in context and make it as much about engagement rather than only driving sales via product features and benefits.

  1. What do you believe is the future of your industry? What would it look like in 2030?

My product is a new hybrid beauty product – a tea, a beauty product and a supplement. So…..the tea industry is in growth year on year, it’s projected to grow by 4.5% per year, and the beauty industry normally has a growth rate of around 5.5% per year, so by 2030 I’m expecting a lot more tea drinkers out there who have discovered the benefits of tea and who want to improve their skin, body, joints, tendons, hair and nails from collagen ingestion by 2030 with organic tea infused with collagen!

Science Has Confirmed What we Already Know: Being ‘Hangry’ is Real

0

We’ve all been through the feeling. You skip lunch and find yourself snapping at everyone around you.

The internet coined that feeling as being ‘hangry’, which combines the words hungry and angry. And now finally science has caught up with what we already know. That hangry is a real phenomenon.

Thanks to a report by New Scientist, we not only know that a lack of food can change your mood, but we also have an explanation for it.

Turns out that there is a link between your blood sugar levels and the hormones that trigger aggression and anger. So when your blood sugar’s low, it can be difficult to concentrate, resulting in anger.

As scientist and columnist Simon Oxenham discovered, low levels of blood sugar prompt the body to release cortisol and adrenaline, two chemicals associated with heightened stress.

There is also an increase in the neuropeptide Y levels, which is the hormone connected to aggression.

But don’t worry we’ve got a cure: Pack lots of snacks.

Are You Using Too Much Toothpaste?

0

How much toothpaste do you regularly use? If it’s enough to cover the whole brush, then it’s definitely far too much.

You probably try and squeeze out enough to cover the length of your brush because of all the commercials you’ve seen, but when it comes to toothpaste, less is more. It’s been reported by the Australian Dental Association that only “one pea-sized blob of fluoridated toothpaste” is required for each brush.

For children, use of too much toothpaste can result in dental fluorosis, which can cause their teeth to become stained or discoloured. And whilst this isn’t a worry with adults, as their teeth have fully developed, use of too much toothpaste is still a waste.

So the next time you brush your teeth, pay attention to how much toothpaste you use. The slower your current tube runs out, the more money you save. And that’s a win in everyone’s book.

Practical Tips for Becoming a Morning Person

With many of us going back to work this week after the holidays it is time to dust off our alarms and get back into a routine. This time of year can be especially hard to gather the motivation to get out of bed, let alone look forward to it. With New Year’s resolutions set we are often wanting to increase productivity, be more active or start a hobby. What if I told you there was a simple way to do this? Well, maybe not so simple for many but opting for an earlier start could be the answer. Below are some practical ways to make the prospect of an earlier wake up less daunting.

It Starts in The Evening

This might go without saying but what we do in the evenings may have a major impact on how we feel about the morning. Going to bed a little earlier, preparing our lunch or deciding on our outfit the night before frees up a considerable amount of time in the morning, giving you more time to use as you desire.

Wake Up Smarter

There is nothing worse than waking up abruptly to our alarm buzzing loudly at 5am, even avid morning people are not welcoming to such a rude awakening. With many apps such as Pillow utilising IPhone technology to track sleep and predict the best time for us to wake up based on the stages of sleep we are in, it can be a great option to feel well rested from the moment we wake up.

Have Something to Look Forward To.

Having a few hours in the morning that are allocated for yourself can be a welcomed reprieve before the day begins. An easy way to get more motivated to get out of bed is to have something you look forward to every morning, such as cooking a nice breakfast, having an extra cup of coffee while watching thesun rises, exercising or catching up on a magazine or book you’ve been struggling to find the time for.

Start Slow

Getting your body clock into a different rhythm can be hard, if you are used to waking up at 7am try 6:45am and increase this time as you get used to it, chances are you’ll start to enjoy the extra time you have to get ready for the day and wantto increase it.

So, start your year off right and challenge yourself to wake up earlier this week.

Festive Feasting Survival Guide

0
0

It’s no secret that around the holidays we all eat a bit more than normal and have less time for exercise.  It’s inevitable and not always controllable.  Despite my best efforts, I’m also guilty of letting my healthy eating slide a little at this time of year. Endless Christmas functions for work, friends, family, sports clubs, and the gym normally elicit the attitude of “I’ll eat healthier in the new year” or “it’s okay, it’s the holidays!”  It’s great to immerse yourself in the spirit of Christmas, but it can also cause long term detriments to your health.

Here are the biggest traps of the festive season and how to handle them:

Lollies or Chocolates People Bring as Gifts to Your Workplace

Try to avoid these, bring a satisfying, healthy lunch to work to appease the hunger pangs.  Enforce a blanket rule forbidding yourself from eating any of this.  I found a half-eaten box of Lindt balls at work and it was hard to stop after just one (I didn’t).

Eating Unhealthily When You’re By Yourself Because “I’m Eating So Much Bad Food Anyway”

Take every opportunity to cook your own healthy food with lots of vegetables or suggest cooking dinner at your place when hanging out with friends.  This is more fun and you’ll feel better afterwards!  On the big day, get into the prawns, salad and turkey.  This is lightweight and healthy food that won’t weigh you down for the next day.

Trying Not to Offend Your Great Aunt

There are plenty of other people to eat mountains of food so you can show your appreciation with a compliment.  Remember that moderation is important: it’s okay to try that chocolate fudge if you only have a little bit. You won’t regret not eating more but will probably feel bad if you eat too much.

Losing Your Exercise Routine

To me, this is the most detrimental trap of the festive season.  Everyone is busy and justifies not exercising with claims of, “I’ve been eating terribly anyway, exercising seems pointless” – this is wrong!  No, you’re not going to burn off that half-chicken, pasta, cheesecake, and glass of champagne with a fifteen-minute run, but any exercise you can do will make you feel better and less likely to spend the afternoon on the couch.

The most significant benefit of keeping up your exercise routine is that once the festivity settles down, it takes little effort to resume your healthy habits.  It doesn’t matter that for a few weeks you overindulged in chocolate and cookies, because after a short period of time you’ll feel fantastic again simply because you maintained a routine.

If you don’t exercise for a few weeks, all the while eating worse and more food than you’re used to, this can trigger a dangerous spiral of unhealthy behaviour.  You become lethargic and despite claims of “I’ll get back to the gym in the new year”, this motivation doesn’t come easily.

Do yourself a favour and work out today.  The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get back into it.  We’re all busy this time of year but running for half an hour only represents a tiny proportion of your day and will leave you feeling so much better.

Antioxidants and Anti-aging Foods

The conventional diet, unfortunately, is rarely providing us with enough. Antioxidant deficiency is a common cause of accelerated ageing and contributes to the development of diseases like cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease, and many others.

Luckily, improving your health, longevity, and slowing down the ageing process is no longer a mystery. Oxidative damage, the common dominator in ageing and disease, is greatly reduced when antioxidant intake is sufficient.

Antioxidants are nutrients that help protect our body from oxidative damage and keep us strong and youthful. The main players are vitamins A, C, E, and betacarotene.

Betacarotene (vitamin A precursor) is found in red/orange/yellow vegetables and fruits. Vitamin C is also abundant in raw fruit and veg. Vitamin E is found in whole grains, nuts, seeds, and their oils.

To get the best protection against ageing and disease, we need foods that are high in antioxidants, daily. To make matters easy, I have listed 20 food sources that score the highest in their antioxidant potential.

Choose at least three foods daily, from the list below to enter the anti-ageing/disease prevention zone.

  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • Half a pear, grapefruit or plum
  • 1/2 cup blackcurrants, blackberries, raspberries or strawberries
  • 1/3 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 heaped tsp mustard
  • 1/2 cup cherries
  • An orange or apple
  • 4 pieces of raw, organic dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids)
  • 7 walnut halves
  • 8 pecan halves
  • 1/4 cup pistachio nuts
  • 1/2 cup cooked lentils
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1 cup cooked kidney beans
  • 1/2 cup of raw, red cabbage
  • 2 cups of broccoli
  • 1 medium artichoke or 8 spears of asparagus
  • 1/3 medium glass (150ml) organic, red wine

Improving your antioxidant potential and boosting your power of disease prevention has never been easier!
