Getty Bans Photos of Retouched Models

They’re one of the largest image databases worldwide and Getty Images are out to prove that they are here to represent the real world. After a move in June to diversify their catalogue of images, calling for inclusivity and to add more people of colour to their stock photographs, Getty is now taking an even bigger leap. As of October 1, 2017, all Getty photographers will have a ban on model retouching written into their contracts.

It’s a huge shift for the industry. As more apps are released to allow the everyday smartphone user to retouch photographs and share them, this shift away from perfected models to more realistic representations is likely to raise some eyebrows. Getty have defended their choice, citing the importance of positive representations:

“Our perceptions of what is possible are often shaped by what we see: positive representation can have direct impact on fighting stereotypes, creating tolerance, and empowering communities to feel represented in society.”

The contractual change also coincides with new rules launching in France. Known as one of the most fashionable countries in the world, the French government have now implemented a law stating that retouched images of models must be accompanied by a disclaimer. The disclaimer also applies to images where a model’s body has been Photoshopped to manipulate their size.

Festive Feasting Survival Guide

It’s no secret that around the holidays we all eat a bit more than normal and have less time for exercise.  It’s inevitable and not always controllable.  Despite my best efforts, I’m also guilty of letting my healthy eating slide a little at this time of year. Endless Christmas functions for work, friends, family, sports clubs, and the gym normally elicit the attitude of “I’ll eat healthier in the new year” or “it’s okay, it’s the holidays!”  It’s great to immerse yourself in the spirit of Christmas, but it can also cause long term detriments to your health.

Here are the biggest traps of the festive season and how to handle them:

Lollies or Chocolates People Bring as Gifts to Your Workplace

Try to avoid these, bring a satisfying, healthy lunch to work to appease the hunger pangs.  Enforce a blanket rule forbidding yourself from eating any of this.  I found a half-eaten box of Lindt balls at work and it was hard to stop after just one (I didn’t).

Eating Unhealthily When You’re By Yourself Because “I’m Eating So Much Bad Food Anyway”

Take every opportunity to cook your own healthy food with lots of vegetables or suggest cooking dinner at your place when hanging out with friends.  This is more fun and you’ll feel better afterwards!  On the big day, get into the prawns, salad and turkey.  This is lightweight and healthy food that won’t weigh you down for the next day.

Trying Not to Offend Your Great Aunt

There are plenty of other people to eat mountains of food so you can show your appreciation with a compliment.  Remember that moderation is important: it’s okay to try that chocolate fudge if you only have a little bit. You won’t regret not eating more but will probably feel bad if you eat too much.

Losing Your Exercise Routine

To me, this is the most detrimental trap of the festive season.  Everyone is busy and justifies not exercising with claims of, “I’ve been eating terribly anyway, exercising seems pointless” – this is wrong!  No, you’re not going to burn off that half-chicken, pasta, cheesecake, and glass of champagne with a fifteen-minute run, but any exercise you can do will make you feel better and less likely to spend the afternoon on the couch.

The most significant benefit of keeping up your exercise routine is that once the festivity settles down, it takes little effort to resume your healthy habits.  It doesn’t matter that for a few weeks you overindulged in chocolate and cookies, because after a short period of time you’ll feel fantastic again simply because you maintained a routine.

If you don’t exercise for a few weeks, all the while eating worse and more food than you’re used to, this can trigger a dangerous spiral of unhealthy behaviour.  You become lethargic and despite claims of “I’ll get back to the gym in the new year”, this motivation doesn’t come easily.

Do yourself a favour and work out today.  The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get back into it.  We’re all busy this time of year but running for half an hour only represents a tiny proportion of your day and will leave you feeling so much better.

Medical Cannabis in Victoria: UPDATE

An announcement is imminent, as Minister for Health Jill Hennessy, and Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford gear up to inform the state of the new changes to medicinal cannabis, and it’s availability to young patients in Victoria.

The changes will support children suffering illnesses to access the treatment, and it will take effect shortly after the announcement.

The callout for easier access to cannabis came after dozens of patients suffering from severe epilepsy where treated successfully. This occurred after the Victorian government introduced a treatment scheme, the first of it’s kind in Australia.

This will contribute an approximate $90 million to Victoria’s economy per year, once it is properly implemented and underway, including up to 500 new jobs.

By 2028, it is expected up to 166,000 patients will have accessed the drug for medical purposes.

Preventing Osteoporosis Through Your Diet

$

0

Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which bone mineral density is reduced, making the bones appear more porous or thinner so they become more prone to fracture. The underlying mechanism in all cases of osteoporosis is an imbalance between bone loss and bone formation. Either bone loss becomes excessive, and/or bone formation by osteoclast cells is diminished.

Interestingly the building of bones is not just up to Calcium. Minerals like Magnesium, Phosphorous, Vitamin A and Vitamin D3, Boron, Silicon and Zinc are just as important as Calcium in building strong bones. It’s common knowledge these days that Vitamin D3 is essential for efficient calcium utilisation, but did you know that Magnesium increases the absorption of calcium into the bones by increasing the production of a hormone called calcitonin? Or that Silicon, found in all plant fibre, as silica is also essential for efficient calcium utilisation and for increasing bone strength, due to it being an integral part of all the connective tissues in the body?

What causes bone loss?

Calcium is the major alkaliser in the body. When we consume a diet excessively high in acid forming foods the body takes calcium from the bones to neutralise the high acid levels. This causes bone loss, as we literally dissolve our skeleton to neutralise the high acidity, caused by our diets. We are the only species that has a higher calcium excretion than calcium absorption. Why? Our bodies need to have the correct Ph for survival; if we become too acidic we die. Our modern day diet is mostly comprised of acid forming foods, like dairy, coffee, processed sugar and the excessive consumption of highly processed grains like wheat. Acid forming diets cause bone loss (osteoporosis), heart disease, kidney disease and a whole host of other health concerns. Another major problem is that our modern day diets lack the minerals needed for healthy bone strength.

Interesting Fact

The Bantu women of Africa live on a sparse diet of vegetable sources, a diet completely free of dairy foods. Their average intake of calcium is 250 to 400 mg a day. This is far lower than the 800 mg. recommended by the RDA. They give birth to as many as ten babies during their life. Each child is breast-fed for ten months. Although childbearing causes an intense calcium drain, osteoporosis is unknown to these people. When Bantu women migrate to the city and adopt a protein-rich diet, osteoporosis and other diseases become a threat to their health. Bileckot R, Audran M, Masson C, Ntsiba H, Simon P, and Renier JC. “Bone density in 20 black African young adults of the Bantu race is identical to that in subjects of white race,” Rev Rhum Mal Osteoartic, Nov 30, 1991, 58(11): 787 – 789

Am I increasing my risk of Osteoporosis?

Smoking, a lack of exercise, high coffee consumption, carbonated beverages, fair skin, long term use of corticosteroids, low body weight, high acidic diets, a high consumption of dairy and grains, oral contraceptive use, oestrogen deficiency, low vitamin D levels, alcoholism, celiac disease (due to the inability to absorb calcium), cadmium or lead toxicity, hyper-thyrodism, leukaemia and other blood diseases all increase the chances of osteoporosis occurring. Stress also has an acid-forming action on the body potentially leading to increased bone loss.

Achieving a higher peak bone mass through exercise and proper nutrition is important for prevention of osteoporosis

Avoid consuming a diet that is excessively acid forming. This includes limiting the consumption of sugary, fried and fatty foods, excessive grain consumption, coffee, alcohol, and dairy. Increase alkalising foods like fruits, vegetables, and sprouts, and calcium rich foods from healthy sources like nuts; especially sesame seeds, fish with bones like sardines mackerel and bluefish, and other calcium rich foods like spinach, parsley and seaweed.

Increase weight-bearing exercise that is not overly stressful on potentially fragile bones. Swimming and gentle weights are a great way to do this.

Quit smoking! This is your highest priority if you are currently smoking.

And want to reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Manage your stress levels, doing this will not only decrease your risk of developing Osteoporosis but it’s vital in the improvement of all health conditions. Make sure you get enough time to relax and unwind. Join a meditation class or go for long walks in nature.

I will leave you with one of my favourite quotes of all time.

“He who has health has hope; and he who has hope, has everything” – Arabic Proverb

Going With Your Gut

In August 2015, I took a leap of faith and decided to enroll at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition® to become a Certified Holistic Health Coach. I had been contemplating this certification for almost a year before I decided to just do it.

My gut was telling me “Yes!” but my head was saying “No, what are you going to do with that?”. It wasn’t until I met with a life coach that I decided to go with my gut and go back to school. I literally signed up for IIN® the night after I met with her—talk about inspiration.

Fast forward a year and a half—I’m now a health coach with my own business. Yes, I’m still holding down a full-time job to help pay the bills but on the side, I devote time to building something I can call my own. It’s not always easy and sometimes I have to really motivate myself (usually with chocolate of some sort), but it’s worth it because I am making a difference in people’s lives.

Is there something in your life that you are currently contemplating starting? It might be that you yourself want to start your own business or maybe you want to make a career change. Ask yourself these questions and listen to your gut—it’s always right.

Why am I scared to take this step?

Many people stay in their comfort zones because they are too afraid of failure or change. What is holding you back? Do you fear failing? Are you afraid that a relationship, income, or family dynamic will change? We have to face our fears and embrace what comes next. If something is tugging at our heart, we need to listen to it and see where it can take us.

What is the risk versus reward?

When you are being faced with a decision, weigh the risk and the reward. If you make this decision, what is the worst possible thing that could happen? Also, if you make this decision, what are the reward possibilities? Think about both answers and compare. Is it worth the risk in order to receive that possible reward?

What daily actions can I take?

If you find that you are still not ready to make a decision, my suggestion is self-care.

When we incorporate self-care into our daily lives, we develop a better sense of who we are and what we are meant to do. Some of my favorite self-care activities that help us tap into our intuition include journaling, meditating, reading, and re-evaluating goals.

What is your gut telling you to do right now? If you take action, where could you be in a year and a half?

Rejoice! Coffee Is Good For Us

A recent study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and Imperial College London has concluded that the general consumption of coffee is associated with reduced risk of various causes. With news like this hitting an increasingly health conscious and coffee crazed Melbourne, I expect to see people doing backflips in the streets with a coffee cup in one hand and hot coffee all over them.

This fantastic news doesn’t mean that people should go overboard with their coffee consumption, though. I for one am prone to over doing it and getting caffeine jitters or coffee-induced headaches.

What it does mean is that you can hit your local café and enjoy a delicious latte with a clean conscience. Although if you’re getting your coffee takeaway consider bringing a reusable cup, we don’t want to push our 50,000 takeaway cups per half hour rate any higher.

One in five Australians will experience IBS in their lives. It’s not a fun time. Being scared to eat for fear of what it will do to your insides is now way to live. So what can you do to make life a little easier for yourself?

Have you heard of FODMAPs? Neither had I until I started researching this subject. FODMAPs are a type of carbohydrate that draws water into your digestive tract, which is not what you want if you have IBS or a problem with bloating. So in order to avoid the troubles downstairs that IBS can cause, it’s best to still to a low-FODMAP diet, which would include food like this…

  • Carrots
  • Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Quinoa
  • Oats
  • Rice
  • Capsicum
  • Tangerines
  • Blueberries
  • Almond, coconut, rice, soy milk
  • Bananas
  • Cucumbers
  • Grapes
  • Spinach
  • Kale

That doesn’t sound too bad, does it? When you begin to exclude PODMAP foods, you may be able to slowly introduce them back to discover which of them are bad triggers for your gut health. It’s a process, so try to have as much fun with the foods that you can eat.

Why Are Young Australians Drinking Less?

$

According to new research, Australia’s youth are drinking and smoking 50 per cent less than youth a decade ago.

Over a (very fitting) period of 18 years, more than 124,440 people aged 14 to 79 were surveyed to analyse how many VBs and vodka cruisers young Aussies were smashing.

Led by Dr Michael Livingston from the Centre for Alcohol Policy Research at Melbourne’s La Trobe University, the study showed that Australians teenagers and young adults were drinking much less than previous generations. In fact, about half as much alcohol is being consumed by teenagers now than it was 10 years ago.

“We’re seeing both a decline in the choice to drink, and amongst those who do choose to drink, a decline in the amount they drink,’ Dr Livingston told ABC Melbourne.

But it’s not just booze. Illicit drug use was also significantly reduced among teenagers and young adults, suggesting that Australia’s youth aren’t just switching from one vice to another – they’re actually forgoing vices substances altogether.

For young people, alcohol often goes hand in hand with socialising, and indulging in a bit of your social lubricant of choice is a tradition heavily ingrained in Australian culture. So what has prompted this significant social shift to stay sober?

Put simply, the reason why young people are drinking less still remains unclear. But it has been suggested that the rise of technology, and consequent shift in how young people are socialising, could be a contributor.

“My favourite theory of the many is that it is something to do with the way interaction has changed,” Dr Livingston said.

“This is a cohort of young people who have grown up embedded in online interactions … the way they’re meeting each other, the way they interact with each other is quite different to previous generations.

How Do You Like Your Eggs?

When sitting down with your gynecologist it can be heartbreaking and anger inducing when they tell you to start thinking about having kids because you’re about to hit thirty-five. As though it’s something that has never crossed your mind before. Many women don’t want to have kids, so sure, they probably haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about when it’s the right time to have kids. But the majority of women will have children, and thanks to our biological clock there will be thought into when and how it will happen.

Research has found that women don’t put off children because of their careers or because they forgot to think about it, it’s simply because they haven’t found the right partner to have children with. When envisioning creating a family many women make the assumption that they will undertake the huge responsibility with a partner. And if the people you’re dating turn out t be duds, then popping out a few kids gets put on the backburner.

A recent study conducted by researchers at De Montfort University found that in order to prevent ‘panic partnering’ women were choosing to freeze their eggs. Two-thirds of the women interviewed didn’t want to rush into parenthood with the wrong person, and that was the reason for their choice. It, in fact, had very little to do with career choices. There have been very few qualitative studies regarding the reasons women choose social freezing, but the idea of a one-track minded career woman is an outdated one.

Tongue and Cheek – What your Mouth says about you

Navel-gazing is a term to describe an excessive amount of self-reflection, but it’s also fun to do. Your belly button, split ends, nails, arm hair; it all makes up a theme park of weird and wonderful delights to focus on when you’re watching a particularly boring episode of Real Housewives.

The next time there’s a commercial break on The Bachelorette or your internet is particularly slow, take out a mirror and check your tongue. Do it for your health.

  1. Pale Tongue – You could be deficient in vitamin A or B12. Maybe consider heading down to the shops and buying a kilo of carrots or spinach. Chug that down for your vitamin A hit. As for B12, you could always shove some liver in your gullet. If that’s a little hardcore, try some fish.
  2. Red Tip – You are probably already aware, but if you’re seeing a red tip you might be distressed. You feeling okay? Look after yourself. Run yourself a bath, turn your phone on silent, and try to relax.
  3. Black/Hairy Tongue – Jeez! That is intense. But don’t fret, you can deal with it. It’s a build up of bacteria. Buy yourself an electric toothbrush. The Oral-B Professional 7000 will do the trick. It also makes brushing fun. You get a sweet app that tells how to make the most of your brush, makes sure you’re brushing correctly and for long enough. Also invest in mouthwash. You might need to bomb your mouth for a few weeks to get it back into shape.

Don’t neglect your mouth! Be aware of the signals it’s giving you, and you’ll be better off.

Vitamin Vaping – Yay or Nay?

$

When going out to a pub or club you see the familiar sight of groups of people choofing away on their cigarettes. Over the past few years that sight has altered slightly, with people creating their own cumulus thanks to vaping.

In Australia vaporisers are most commonly used by 18-24 year olds, with 6.8% choosing to vape. The research surrounding whether vaping is better than smoking is still inconclusive, but are there other possible benefits?

A new marketing strategy seems to be pushing some vaporisers and vaping juice as a way to achieve a healthy diet. A flood of vitamin infused vape juices are now available, but is there research to back up the stated positive effects? One brand in particular, Vitastick, claims to have vitamin A, C, D, E and 20 servings of B12 per stick. That sounds great, but can you absorb all of that through your lungs? In order for the body to absorb those twenty servings of B12, a glycoprotein called gastric intrinsic factor must be present in the stomach, but if the vapor bypasses the stomach entirely there is no evidence to suggest it can be absorbed. Much like most research surrounding vaping, it is all still inconclusive.

Feel free to buy your vitamins in a vape, just know that you’ve got to take it all with a grain of salt until we have scientific evidence around the practice. Buy what you want, but be a well-informed consumer.

You’re Late! Doesn’t Mean You’re Pregnant

We all envy those women who get their ‘little friend’ every 28 days. They’re the kind of person that has perfect hair and floats on a cloud of realised dreams and fulfillment. Or maybe that’s resentment talking? Either way, for the rest of us, our periods can arrive at any time and burst forward like the elevator from The Shining. It’s a horror film in our pants with no indication for when the killer will strike. While I can’t make Eve’s curse run on time, I can tell you why it might be happening.

  • Stress!

Life can suck sometimes, and in response your ovaries FREAK OUT. They want to participate in life just a much as you do during stressful times; zero. Try to drink a cup of tea and chill out.

  • Birth Control

While it is a very handy thing to have, let’s not pretend that birth control is always positive. It can really mess you up. With all of those hormones playing around with ya bits, sometimes things go a little astray. Be sure to check with your doctor if your birth control is behaving abnormally.

  • Thyroid Imbalance

If your body is a little out of whack, you might need to go in for some blood tests to determine whether your thyroid is either overactive or underactive.

Body-Shaming – It Runs in the Family

$

0

Family gatherings are tough for many reasons. It can be particularly hard to navigate a family that has a bad habit of body-shaming. It’s always a shock to the system when you have spent all year working on building up your self-esteem, only to have your grandma comment on the size of your thighs. So how do you survive the minefield of a family gathering with your self-worth in tact?

Your parents are people

It can be hard to remember that you parents most likely had to deal with body-shaming from their parents. That’s where they learned to judge themselves and other people. And that’s sad. Remind yourself that it comes from a sad place. You can either feel bad for them and ignore the behavior or you can ask them to remember how they felt when their parents said things like that. Nothing wrong with a bit of introspection.

You have different priorities

It’s okay to point out to your family that you have different priorities to them. If Auntie June never shuts up about ways you can improve your looks to snag a partner, maybe mention to her that you don’t rely on others for happiness and fulfillment. And make a few jokes about dying surrounded by cats. She’ll love it!

You’re allowed boundaries

Family is important, yes. That is until family becomes toxic. You are allowed to have boundaries. You are allowed to advocate for yourself. You’re not twelve anymore. If your family doesn’t respect what you will and won’t tolerate, then they need to understand that you won’t be spending as much time with them anymore.

This Is How Stress Affects Your Body

$
0
0

A lot of non-Australians assume that Aussies live a stress-free life, spending their days walking around in thongs, relaxing at the beach, having a beer or two in the sun and occasionally surfing.

The stereotype couldn’t be more wrong.

A 2015 study by the Australian Psychological Society found that Australians are becoming increasingly stressed and anxious. Approximately 35% of the population reported a significant level of distress in their lives, 26% reported above normal levels of anxiety, and an equal 26% reported moderate to extremely severe levels of depression. The numbers are concerning.

The most common cause of stress? Personal finances. It’s no surprise then that the workplace is commonly seen as the most prolific environment for anxiety and health issues.

Stress is no joke. We might like to pretend that we’re fine and that we can deal with whatever is thrown at us, but sometimes, that’s just not the case, particularly for those who have previously been exposed to high levels of stress and were unable to resolve the problem.

In simple terms, the basis of stress is negativity. The more negative your constant thoughts and beliefs are, the more easily you will be affected by stress and suffer the consequences. It sounds like an exaggeration, but that’s the harsh truth.

For instance, say your boss tells you he/she wants to have a word with you next week and doesn’t tell you what it is about. If you’re someone inclined to have negative thoughts, you will think that your boss might not be happy with your work and that they’re going to fire you; you are constantly having negative thoughts about yourself, believing you’re not good enough and that you don’t deserve anything remotely close to a promotion. So you will spend the rest of the week stressing about that meeting, wondering what exactly your boss wants to tell you and what you’re going to do when you lose your job.

It’s an endless train of negative thoughts. And it doesn’t end there.

Not only is your mind blinded by this constant dark state of mind, your biology changes to adjust to your current mental status quo.

Your immune system is weakened, your hormone levels become unbalanced and inflammation spreads all over your insides, leaving you unprotected against any disease. That’s why we tend to get sick in times of high stress and end up catching a cold, a virus or having digestive problems.

It’s believed that 95% of all diseases are stress related. This means that we have control over 95% of our own health.

Think about it. Negativity is not something you are born with, so it’s not part of your nature. This means that if you resolve the underlying causes of such negative thinking and behavioural patterns, and retrain your physiology to respond to stress in a more efficient way, you will be able to maintain an all-round healthy lifestyle and get what you really want in life. If you don’t, you will fall victim of the same physiologically responsive pattern every time you’re exposed to stress.

It’s all about knowing how to retrieve your underlying emotional problems, resolve them and go from stress to success in little time.

Take control of your life and don’t let stress stop you from living a happy and fulfilling life.

Celine Healy, known as “the Stress Resolution Expert” by her clients, is a respected stress resolution strategist with an extensive background in counselling, coaching and healing people from all kinds of distress in their lives. Introducing the True Protein Bar

After years of development to perfect the formula, True Protein has launched their first Protein Bar, available in two delicious flavours: Salted Caramel and Rich Chocolate. Made from 100% natural ingredients including whole foods, whey and collagen, the bar has been developed by True’s in-house Accredited Sports Dietitian, Roslyn Yee, who worked to perfect a nutritious, high-quality bar free from artificial additives, unnecessary fats and no added sugar.

It was around four years ago when the True product development team first started work on a protein bar formula. Tired of consuming dense, bad-tasting, over-processed protein snacks with hidden sugars and an artificial aftertaste, the True team worked tirelessly to develop a bar that would be an antidote to all the bad stuff. Formulas were tried, tested, tasted and started over again and again until a truly delicious, nutritious and 100% natural bar was achieved.

Made from a blend of high-quality New Zealand grass-fed whey protein concentrate and Argentinian-sourced collagen, plus all-natural whole foods, the bar ticks the box for nutrition, protein content and flavour, with a complete amino acid profile perfect for a post-workout snack. Quality soluble fibre from tapioca and texture from nuts and chia seeds, both healthy sources of unsaturated fat, fibre and protein, sets this soft, irresistibly chewy bar apart from the rest. Good for the gut, good for your muscles, good for you!

3 Stylish Ways to Be Sun Smart This Summer

Here in Australia Summer can be harsh and the sweltering heat from the sun can be hard to escape. We are all susceptible to UV rays every day and according to the Melanoma Institute of Australia there is predicted to be 15,229 cases of melanoma diagnosed in 2019.With these confronting statistics it is important to ensure we are all protecting ourselves from sun damage. But it doesn’t have to be daggy at all, there are a few simple pieces that we can include into our outfits this Summer to ensure we are protected.

Hats

While hats were once mandatory in school, as adults there is no one telling us we can’t play outside without one anymore and as a result our heads are often left exposed as we commute to work or when we are on our lunch breaks. With so many stylish brands available in Australia for every budget there is no reason not to incorporate one into your daily routine. In fact, a hat can be a simple addition to your outfit and with the added benefit of sun protection it’s a win-win.

 Protective swimwear

One of the many ways Australians try to escape the heat is by migrating to one of our many beautiful beaches. Though we forget the added risks of sun damage when we are swimming. Many sunscreens are only water resistant for a few hours and it can be hard to remember to reapply. Opting for swimwear that covers you is a stress-free way of minimising the chance of sun damage. Australian swimwear label Charlee Swim(LINK) has released a range of long and short sleeve rashies that make covering up look chic.

Sunglasses

With much of the focus of sun protection being on our skin we can forget to protect our eyes from harsh rays. Ensuring we have a good quality pair of sunglasses is essential for proper eye protection.

Things We’re Leaving Behind In 2019: Diet Culture

You might not have heard of the term diet culture before, but you’ve definitely come across it. ‘Diet Culture’refers to beliefs and myths about food and weight. Think skinny teas, detoxes and fad diets. Diet culture has become so ingrained in our society that we often don’t notice it anymore. It disguises itself as ‘concern trolling’ or the ill-founded assumption that thin will always equal healthy. At its core, diet culture is toxic because it teaches us that we have to change our bodies to be acceptable and accepted in society.

Diet culture has been on the out for a while now, yet it still manages to permeate our lives and our social media feeds in particular. The new year is the time to finally rid ourselves of the toxicities of diet culture for good and we have three steps to help you do it.

Learn to spot the sneaky ones

Diet culture is everywhere! It can be sneaky, and it will often be where you least expect it. Photoshopping and airbrushing is diet culture. Fat-shaming and fat-phobia is diet culture. Detoxes and fad weight-loss products are diet culture. If something is telling you to lose weight and change your body to look a certain way, it is probably diet culture.

Unfollow, unfollow, unfollow

Now that you know how to spot diet culture, you can unfollow it. In September 2019, Instagram implemented new policythat restricts users from seeing posts advertising weight loss products. While this was a step in the right direction, there is still plenty of diet culture being propagated on the platform. Next time you see a flat tummy shake or an appetite-suppressant lollipop, click unfollow. They don’t work, and you don’t need those lies on your feed or in your life!

Follow, follow, follow

There are plenty of inspiring anti-diet culture accounts on Instagram that provide information about the dangers of diet culture and advocate against it. Make your Instagram feed a positive, informative and diet culture-free zone by following accounts such as @drjoshuawolrich, @madalingiorgetta, @i_weigh, and @bodyposipanda.

There’s lots to learn and unlearn when it comes to diet culture but armed with this new information you can go into 2020 without fear of diet-culture, of fat-shaming or detox teas. Good luck!
